Bio

Benjamin Seaman (born 1966) is a painter, photographer, and mixed-media artist who uses vintage and queer photography as resources for studying value, form, light and paint. Formosa is based in NYC and the Catskills, where he maintains a multidisciplinary studio practice.

Seaman grew up in New Mexico, Kansas, and Connecticut, attending the Educational Center for the Arts and Yale College as a high school student before attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received his BFA and had his first solo show at Space Gallery in Wicker Park. Formosa's adult years focused on graphic design, but during the 2020 Covid pandemic, Formosa returned to hia art practice, attending online life-drawing sessions to maintain queer community and began using the male figure as a jumping-off point for aesthetic exploration. Working under a pseudonym allowed Formosa to focus on a single area with enhanced freedom.

Since 2020, Seaman has participated in numerous group shows including Barnwood: Nude and Lewd, a quarterly group show curated by Stephen Hengst for Pink Stallion Events, the Fire Island Pines Art Project, and The Dirty Show, an annual expo of erotic work in Detroit, Michigan. Brett had his first NYC solo show at Shag Sex Shop and Erotic Gallery in Brooklyn, June 2023. He continues to participate in the Barnwood show and will next be appearing in NYC at the September 2024 Superfine Art Fair.
